William Shakespeare (April 26, 1564 – April 23, 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world\’s pre-eminent dramatist. His plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Shakespeare moved from Stratford to London in 1585, where he began a successful career as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company, which was later known as the King’s Men. During his time on London, Shakespeare produced most of his own work, which has a range of a variety of genres, such as comedies, histories, tragedies, and tragicomedies, or romances. Some of his most noted works, including Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth, are considered amongst the finest works in the English language.

At the age of 49, he retired and returned to his hometown Stratford, where he lived for the remainder of his life. As there are only few records of Shakespeare’s private life, there has been much speculation regarding his personal life and his works.
