The Pamela Positive: Clif Bar\’s Cradle to Cradle — Not Cradle to Grave

This is part of our series on Clif Bar\’s positive CSR policies–good for business, the community and the world.  Our last post discussed Clif Bar\’s Triple E Approach: Everyone, Everything, Early.  In this post, we explore how Clif Bar is conserving and reducing waste.

Clif Bar innovates again in the reduction of waste with what I would call \’strategic thoughtfulness.\’  By being thoughtful about their processes in creating their Clif Bars, they have reduced waste at every point. 

One of their most thoughtful messages is to \’consider the whole system.\’  This is not easy.  It means examining how the wrapper is made, to the substance of the store displays to what their product eventually becomes when it goes back to the earth.   What starts out as a Clif Bar should be made as much as possible from and with nature, and return itself equally so.

A) Close the loop.  Think cradle-to-cradle, not cradle to grave.
Where can we reduce waste and close loops in each stage of the product\’s life style?


B) Design to reduce our shipping footprint.
Consider the whole system – wrapper, caddy, master case,* point-of-purchase displays – and design for pallet optimization.

Clif Bar sells energy bars, and does so while focusing on five bottom lines: sustaining the planet, the community, their people, their business and their brands.  Clif Bar is an inspiring example of a company that is socially conscious at every stage, from the ingredients they use to the packaging they sell their food in to the way they\’re engaging with the community.
