\”We are your family, not your cocoon. Get out. Get to work. Mix with people, especially your team. Don\’t be afraid of the world. When you become comfortable with yourself, you\’ll do great things.\”

– Sandra Castroneves, Helio Castroneves\’ mother

Helio Castroneves is a world-renowned racecar driver. Fueled by his dreams, he went from Brazil to America, but found life to be very lonely as a 19-year-old with limited English.

He called home. He just wanted to go back. He was willing to give up racecar driving, which he had cherished from a very young age.

In tears on the phone with his mother, she said to him:

\”We are your family, not your cocoon. Get out. Get to work. Mix with people, especially your team. Don\’t be afraid of the world. When you become comfortable with yourself, you\’ll do great things.\”

She encouraged him to pursue what we he was called to do…to follow his talents…to live his dreams. That\’s why he was here.

Where we can, we should try to follow our dreams. We can hope that our family will be there for us, always loving us and encouraging us on our course.  And so we should do the same for our families, our communities and the people in our lives.  Love and encourage them to follow their call.

Helio Castroneves is a Brazilian auto racer, currently competing in the American IndyCar Series.  He has won the Indianapolis 500 three times, one of only nine people to win at least three times.
